Oral Health Care Program for the Disabled Persons Using the Toothpick Tooth-Brushing Method

Abstract


Objective: In order to promote the oral health level for severe disabled persons who were hospitalized at the disabled personal facility at Jeju community, tooth-pick method of the tooth-brushing have been provided individually and periodically to all members in the facility and check the oral health to compare the oral health level at before and the after.

Methods: Forty of all members age 16 to 60 who have lived the Je-ju disabled nursing home disabled facility with severe disabled syndrome were participated through the written agreement by guardians or parents. Tooth-pick method of tooth-brushing was served individually for 10 to15 minutes service for individual, on every other week interval on Saturday or Sunday by visiting the facility with the dental examination instruments and tooth-pick toothbrush as 2 lane of the bristle tufts with zigzag line up, and individual dental care for 6 months. On performing the tooth-brushing, oral photo was taken in order to check such index as PHP (patient hygiene performance index), CPI (critical periodontal index) GI (gingival index) PMA (papillary, marginal, attached gingival index) and the oral malodor were checked.

Results: Severe malodor and relatively high score of the periodontal index at first visit with the most of them with bleeding and sometimes complaint with the dull pain on the half of the subjects, otherwise it would be decreased the symptoms for 6 months and only 5 subjects got the slight bleeding when tooth pick tooth brushing. It had decreased the CPI, PMA, PHP, GI index and oral malodor level by time passing for 6 months later (p£¼0.05) and also decreased gingival pocket depth.

Conclusion: Tooth-pick method tooth-brushing would be useful to decrease the periodontal index and recommended to apply in order to promote the oral health care for the disabled persons.
